On a typical school day more than 54,000 pupils will miss school without permission. That’s an estimated 7.5 million school days missed every year.
Research shows that children who are not in school are most vulnerable and are easily drawn into crime and anti-social behaviour. That probably reflects what we all already know, or at least would suspect, but last year’s truancy sweep statistics showed that 23% - almost one in four pupils challenged who had no valid reason for missing school – were Primary school age.
As educationalists, we have to take the challenge of managing attendance seriously, as we know it can have a huge impact on the life chances of children.
